PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surge absorber in which mounting on a substrate is made easy, without making the volume of discharge space small, and to provide a manufacturing method of the surge absorber. SOLUTION: This is provided with a columnar ceramics 11, a surge-absorbing element 2 having a pair of discharge electrodes 13, 14 arranged facing on a surface of the columnar ceramics 11 via a discharge gap 12; a sealing glass 3 to form the discharge space 24 inside by sealing the surge absorbing element 2; and a pair of lead wires 4, 5 which are fixed to the discharge electrodes 13, 14 and which are led outside the sealing glass 3. Leading directions of the lead wires 4, 5 are mutually parallel, and perpendicular to the axial line of the surge-absorbing element 2. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
