<p>Preparation of azo pigment (I) containing melamine or its tautomer or hydrated form comprises reacting a mixture of azobarbituric acid mono-cation salt (II) and azobarbituric acid di-cation salt (III) with a nickel compound and melamine. Preparation of an azo pigment of formula (I) containing melamine or its tautomer or hydrated form comprises reacting a mixture of azobarbituric acid mono-cation salt of formula (II) and azobarbituric acid di-cation salt of formula (III) with a nickel compound and melamine. cation 1, cation 2, cation 3 : univalent or a part of polyvalent cations with corresponding positive charge, preferably an alkali cation, preferably Li, Na or K (preferred), 0.5 alkali earth cation, preferably 0.5 Mg, 0.5 Ca, 1/3 Al or optionally substituted ammonium cation, preferably unsubstituted ammonium cation.
