<p>A liquid crystal optical device that exhibits a low haze value in a state of transmission and excels in not only the stability of transmission-scattering performance but also productivity; and a process for manufacturing the same. In one form, there is provided liquid crystal optical device (1) comprising a pair of insulating substrates (11,21), at least one of which is transparent; electrodes (12,22) disposed on inside faces of the substrates; and, interposed between the inside faces of the substrates, composite (50) of nematic liquid crystal and hardening matter. The composite (50) is obtained by interposing the following chiral nematic liquid crystal composition between the inside faces of the insulating substrates and, in a state of liquid crystal alignment, hardening the hardening compound contained in the liquid crystal composition. The chiral nematic liquid crystal composition is a liquid crystal composition exhibiting a chiral nematic phase, which contains a nematic liquid crystal and a hardening compound, at least part of the hardening compound being an optically active substance with optical rotation capability, the contained optically active substance with optical rotation capability consisting substantially only of the hardening compound.</p> |
