PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal composition which has memory responsive in low voltage and in a short time, to provide a liquid crystal element, to provide a reflection type display material and to provide a modulated light modulatinor material. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal composition is a dual-frequency drive smectic A crystal composition having a cross-over frequency where the smectic A phase is induced by mixing a first nematic liquid crystal compound or composition with a second nematic liquid crystal compound or composition. The liquid crystal element is provided with a pair of electrodes of which at least one is a transparent electrode and which has a liquid crystal layer between a pair of the electrodes wherein the liquid crystal layer contains the smectic A liquid crystal composition.
