<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image scanner, capable of quickly switching the background color in document image scanning, preventing show-off and removing the under layer color. <P>SOLUTION: The image scanner 100 comprises an image scanning unit 11 for scanning an image on a fed document paper, and a background member 19 provided near the bottom of the image scanning unit 11. The background member 19 is moved in a subscanning direction by a transportat means and a background color on an image scan optical path of the image scan unit 11 is switched to white or black. When the color of the background member on the image scanning optical path of the image scanning unit 11 is white, a under layer color removal correction coefficient table for the white member is referred to, for determining its correction coefficient. When it is black, under layer color removal correction coefficient table for the black member is referred to, for determining its correction coefficient.
