PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a hit rate when a main subject is automatically selected from a picture. SOLUTION: An imaging apparatus comprises an imaging element which photoelectrically converts a subject image, a face detector which detects the face of a person being a subject from an image signal obtained by the imaging element, a photographic mode setting unit which sets a photographic mode, and a main subject discriminating unit which discriminates the main subject from the face of the person detected by the face detector and changes standards for discriminating the main subject from the face of the person detected by the face detector according to the photographic mode set by the photographic mode setting unit.
