An apparatus and a method for converting a short message of a mobile terminal are provided to offer a short message service containing personal information corresponding to a destination number by inserting a tag in a short message, obtaining recipient information corresponding to the tag and the destination number of the short message from the phone book, and outputting the obtained information at the location of the tag. An apparatus for converting a short message in a mobile terminal comprises a message preparation part(240), a tag confirmation part(230), a message conversion part(260), and a memory(210). The message preparation part(240) receives input information necessary to make out a short message, makes output the short message, and provides a tagging function when a request to use tagging function is made. If a request to transmit the short message is generated, the tag confirmation part(230) checks whether the short message contains a tag. In case a tag exists in the short message, the message conversion part(260) searches the phone book for recipient information corresponding to the tag and the destination number of the short message, and outputs the obtained information at the location of the tag.
