The present inyention provides apparatus and methods for facilitating. en try through a bodily opening (105) comprising a spreader (20) having a plura lity of arms, each of the arms being formed of a resilient material and shap ed so that the distal ends tend to be spaced apart from each other when the spreader is in an open position. At least one Of the arms has an engaging me mber having a sharpness adapted to grasp tissue. When the spreader is radial ly deployed to the open position the engaging member (32, 34, 36) grasps tis sue adjacent the bodily opening and urges the tissue away from the opening t o facilitate visualization of the opening and/or access into the opening. A catheter (50) or other device may subsequently be inserted between one or mo re arms of the spreader and through the bodily opening while the spreader ho lds the tissue in a spread position. |
