PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic transmission capable of reducing the size in the radial direction of a transmission casing, by devising an arranging position of a plate-like coupling. SOLUTION: A ring gear 134 in a planetary gear mechanism is engaged with a transmission casing 111 via the plate-like couplings PC1 and PC2. The plate-like couplings PC1 and PC2 selectively provide a bidirectional lock state, a unidirectional lock state, the other directional lock state and a neutral state of allowing bidirectional rotation, by a change in a slide position in the peripheral direction of two slide plates 11 and 12. The plate-like couplings PC1 and PC2 are arranged in a space between the ring gear 134 and a vertical wall member 180 of the transmission casing 111 (are arranged in a state of being offset in the axial L direction of the planetary gear mechanism to the ring gear 134).
