PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a commercially manufacturing method of a large amount of a nitride or oxynitride fluorescent substance using an alloy as a raw material, which overcomes the conventional problems in that the nitriding reaction proceeds rapidly when heated, the melting, phase separation of the raw material or the decomposition of the nitride occurs due to the generated heat and the properties of a fluorescent substance is deteriorated. SOLUTION: In manufacturing the fluorescent substance by heating the alloy containing two types or more of metal elements constituting the fluorescent substance in nitrogen-containing atmosphere, the heating is conducted over the temperature area of from a by 100°C lower temperature than the melting point of the alloy to a by 30°C lower temperature than the melting point at the rate of temperature elevation of 9°C/minute or less. The deterioration of the properties of the fluorescent substance due to the accumulation of the reaction heat can be avoided by reducing the rate of temperature elevation in the particular temperature area although if the temperature elevation is fast, the niriding reaction may not proceed up to the inner part of the alloy particle because the alloy powder is molten by the exotherm at the time of the nitriding and each alloy particle is fusion bonded.
