PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically take a photograph at a proper exposure for a person and background, respectively. SOLUTION: An imaging apparatus 100 has an imaging device 14 for performing photoelectric conversion of a subject image, a luminance determination means 123 for determining the luminance of a subject area from an image signal obtained by using the imaging device, and a subject determination means 121 for determining whether the person is included in the subject from the image signal. A control means 50 controls photography based on the determination results using the subject determination means when it is determined that the luminance of the subject area is lower than a particular luminance by the luminance determination means.
