Production of electrodes comprises moistening a polymer electrolyte membrane with solvent or solvent vapor; applying thixotropic screen printing pastes to the cathode side and the anode side of the membrane by screen printing, in which both pastes contain a precious metal catalyst powder, carbon powder as catalyst support, polymer electrolyte and a solvent mixture of water and organic solvent; and tempering both sides of the membrane to remove solvent and forming abrasion-resistant porous electrode layers. Preferred Features: The screen printing pastes are produced by dispersing precious metal catalyst powder and carbon powder in a polymer electrolyte solution in the solvent mixture with stirring and under the action of ultrasound.
