PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a wavelength separating film in which the total number of laminating films can be reduced, while thickness of each laminated layer can be reduced, and shift breadth of a transmission band and a blocking band due to deviation of an incident angle of light can be reduced and further the blocking band can be made broader than before, and to obtain a filter for optical communication using the same. SOLUTION: The wavelength separating film is constituted by alternatively laminating a first thin film consisting of a high refractive index material and a second thin film consisting of a low refractive index material. The first thin film is a Si thin film and the second thin film is a Ta<SB>2</SB>O<SB>5</SB>thin film or a Nb<SB>2</SB>O<SB>5</SB>thin film or a ZrO<SB>2</SB>thin film or an Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>thin film.
