PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an industrially suitable method for producing 3-(hydroxy or alkoxy)-4-alkoxy-6-nitrobenzoic acid from 3,4-dialkoxy-6-nitrobenzoic acid in an easy way without a complicated operation. SOLUTION: The invention relates to the method for producing 3-(hydroxy or alkoxy)-4-alkoxy-6-nitrobenzoic acid comprising a reaction of the 3,4-dialkoxy-6-nitrobenzoic acid represented in formula 1, (in the formula, R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>are each a group not relating to the reaction, R, R<SP>3</SP>and R<SP>4</SP>are each H or a (substituted)hydrocarbon group) with a hydroxy compound represented by formula 2, (in the formula, R' is H or a (substituted)hydrocarbon group) in the presence of a base.
