PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid composition for the oral cavity exhibiting excellent usability (dischargeability and retention) and storage stability (appearance, pH and viscosity) and having high improving effect on the retention of a compounded medicinal component in the oral cavity. SOLUTION: The liquid composition for the oral cavity comprises (A) 0.5-2.0 mass% alginate having viscosity of 5-100 mPa s as 1.0 mass% aqueous solution at 20°C and a mass ratio of D-mannuronic acid [M] to L-guluronic acid [G] of 0.5-2.0, (B) 0.2-1.2 mass% carboxymethylcellulose sodium having an etherification degree of 0.8-1.6, (C) 0.05-0.5 mass% phosphate expressed by general formula (1): M<SB>n</SB>H<SB>3-n</SB>PO<SB>4</SB>(M is Na or K; and n is 1, 2 or 3) and (D) 45-90 mass% water wherein the mass ratio of (A)/(B) is 0.5-6.0 and the pH of the composition is 6.0-8.5.
