PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet feed separation device which easily removes jammed sheet without breaking it. SOLUTION: A planetary bevel gear 14 engaged with bevel gears 11a, 11b provided opposing to first and second output members 11, 12 arranged on a coaxial fixed shaft 13a is supported by a shaft part 15a provided in an orthogonal shaft member 15 turnable around the fixed shaft 13, and a brake means for stopping rotation of an intermediate shaft 17 internally fitted to the output member 12 and connected to the orthogonal shaft member 15 is provided to prevent transmission of rotating force to the second output member 12 when the brake means is released. When sheet jam occurs, the brake means is released to prevent transmission of rotating force to a retard roller 2. This structure prevents the retard roller 2 from idling and becoming drawing resistance when jammed sheet is drawn out, and thus, the jammed sheet is easily removed with small drawing force without breaking the sheet.
