<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element which can achieve such excellent display quality that reflection in a metallic part of a metal black matrix (BM) or the like is not observed. <P>SOLUTION: Each member of a back light 7, a second polarizing plate 6, a twisted optical compensation layer 4, a liquid crystal cell 3, a retardation plate 2 and a first polarizing plate 1 is layered in this order from the side opposite from the viewing side of the liquid crystal display element. The retardation plate 2 is a quarter-wave plate. The twist angle of the liquid crystal cell is 230-250° and the twist angle of the twisted optical compensation layer 4 is 170-190°. The twist direction of the orientation in the liquid crystal cell 3 is reverse to the twist direction of the orientation direction in the twisted optical compensation layer 4. The second polarizing plate 6, the twisted optical compensation layer 4, the liquid crystal cell 3, the retardation plate 2 and the first polarizing plate 1 are arranged so that each of the absorption axis of the polarizing plate, the stretching axis of the retardation plate and the orientation axes of the twisted optical compensation layer 4 and of the liquid crystal cell 3 satisfies a prescribed condition. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT |
