A composite fabric comprises an open mesh woven glass cloth and fibrous material filling the meshes of said cloth, said material being principally carded spinning grade asbestos fibres in substantially random disposition and interlocked with one another and with the yarns of the glass cloth. The fibrous material may consist of asbestos fibres only or may comprise a carded mixture of spinning grade asbestos fibres and glass or organic carrier fibres, of e.g. rayon, cotton, nylon, or polyacrylonitrile or polyethylene terephthalate. The fabric may be made by passing the woven glass cloth with the fibrous webs on one or both sides of it between pressure rolls, one of which may be of rubber, while the other may be a steel calender roll. The fabric may be used as such or may be impregnated with a varnish, natural or synthetic rubber or a synthetic resin, e.g. polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl chloride, polytetrafluorethylene, polymonochlorotrifluoroethylene, or thermosetting resins, or sized with starch. The fabrics impregnated with a solution of a resin or drying oil in a volatile solvent, pigmented or otherwise may be used as electrical insulation. Several layers of the fabric may be impregnated with thermoplastic or thermosetting resins, e.g. phenol-aldehyde, silicone or epoxy resins and laminated, as flat sheets or moulded to shape. |
