A method of removing dust from gases by spraying an ascending gas stream with water is characterized by such a local adaptation of the size of the water drops to the pressure of the ascending gas or by such local adaptation of the pressure to the droplet size, that a stationary layer of floating drops is maintained in the spray ing region. As shown, a suitable apparatus for carrying out such a process comprises housing 2 which is attached by extension 1a to cupola stack 1. Within the housing is secured an annular metal plate 3 having an annular channel 4 with a number of apertures 7 connected to downwardly sloping channels 8, below which is situated conical roof 6 to the stack, and which is suspended from the annular ring 3 by chains 5. Above the ring are situated, one above the other, two sets of nozzles 9 and 13. The holes of these nozzles are such that the droplet size increases with the spraying angle measured from the nozzle axis. As the drops fall, they are met by the upward gas stream 18 and the heaviest drops meet the gas flow at the region of greatest upward pressure near the walls. In this way a stationary layer of floating drops is obtained. The muddy water containing the dust collects in channel 4 and runs down channel 8 on to conical roof 6, and thence forms a falling curtain of water 20, which prevents spray entering cupola stack 1, before being run off through 17. If it is desired to reduce the upward gas pressure, casing 2 may be made of an upwardly divergent shape. |
