A surface light source device containing an exhaust pipe and a backlight unit are provided to shorten the time of brightness stabilization by accelerating the activation of mercury. A surface light source device comprises a light source body and an exhaust pipe(150). At the light source body, a plurality of discharge spaces are formed by the first substrate(110) and the second substrate(112). The exhaust pipe, of which the inside is vacant, is mounted at the external surface of the light source body. At least one of both ends of the exhaust pipe is sealed up. A plurality of penetration holes are formed at the surface of the exhaust pipe. The penetration holes are arranged correspondingly with the discharge spaces. |
