The invention relates to a surge arrester, comprising at least one varistor block (1), an end fitting (3), a reinforcing element (S1), holding the varistor block (1) under tension to the end fitting (3) and at least one anchor element (27), which holds the reinforcing element (9) under tension to the end fitting (3), whereby the anchor element (27) comprises at least one edge (29) which cuts into the reinforcing element (9). The anchor element (27) is preferably a cutting-ring joint.
