PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a porous ceramic fired body having a high water-absorption speed, a high water-absorption rate, and a low water-releasing speed and suitable, for example, for countermeasures against heat islands, by improving water-retaining performance of a porous ceramic fired body. SOLUTION: The porous ceramic fired body is characterized by being a fired body containing a fired material of weathered volcanic ash and fired vermiculite and having an open porosity of≥17%. The porous ceramic fired body has high water-absorption performance, high water-retaining performance and the ability to gradually release once-retained moisture over a long time and can be supplied stably in a large quantity at a relatively low cost.
