PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a glycolide by condensing a glycolic acid and then depolymerizing the condensate in a synthesis method of a polyglycolic acid and a synthesis apparatus. SOLUTION: The synthesis method of a polyhydroxycarboxylic acid comprises synthesizing the polyhydroxycarboxylic acid by ring-opening polymerizing a hydroxycarboxylic acid or a condensate thereof after depolymerized into a cyclic dimer, where melted matter containing the hydroxycarboxylic acid or the condensate thereof is formed into a thin layer by means of external force and is condensed and then the condensate is depolymerized to give the cyclic dimer.
