An activator for a dry-charged electric battery comprises a reservoir 10 containing a liquid electrolyte and having an outlet 11 at one end to permit the flow of electrolyte into the battery, a rupturable metallic diaphragm 12 closing the outlet and a pivotably mounted cutter 15b to rupture the diaphragm. A bladder 34 clamped to the other end of the reservoir is inflatable by gas from a cartridge 32 to cause the electrolyte to leave the reservoir, In operation, a switch 28 closes an electrical circuit to a squib 38 which forces a plunger 37 on to the lever arm 15a of the cutter so that the cutter slits the diaphragm. Simultaneously, current in leads 26a, 26b melts a wire 29 releasing a bail 21 of spring wire which then rotates, strikes and breaks a tabulation 20 at 201, unblocking a nipple 19 so that the gas from the cartridge fills the bladder. In a modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), the lever arm is bifurcated and straddles the neck of the plunger; the plunger is moved by a coil spring when released by a lanyard and swings the cutter against the diaphragm shortly before breaking the nipple.
