930,555. Ball joints. ENGINEERING PRODUCTIONS (CLEVEDON) Ltd. Oct. 16, 1961 [Oct. 27, 1960], No. 36964/60. Class 65 (2). A socket 3 (Fig. 1) or 3d (Fig. 4) made of nylon, polypropylene, an iso-cyanate condensation product, or material incorporating P.T.F.E. or plastic fibre, is moulded around the ball element 1, 1b before the latter is entered into the housing and the socketed element is then pressfitted into the housing to provide a pre-loaded joint. The housing is made in separable parts such as a collar 4 and a closure plate 7, Fig. 1, or a collar 11 screwed on to an internally hollowed plug part 9 and retained thereon by a tab washer 12, Fig. 4. The screwing on of the collar 11 may apply an additional pre-load to the socket controlled by one or more shims 17. The plug 9 is formed as part of a stub axle carrier 10, but in a further embodiment the plug is separate and the collar is externally threaded to engage in a suitable opening in the carrier. Lubricant may be provided within the housing. |
