Apparatus for matching a set of staves to ensure that the combined lengths of the croze (groove used for fitting head to a barrel) is substantially equal to the circumference of the barrel head to be received therein comprises a graduated measuring wheel 5 and a gauging member 12. Wheel 5 is initially locked, by a brake 11, so that the zero of wheel 5 is aligned with the surface of a support 2. A stave 3 is then placed on a movable support 7 and a support 2 and the edge of wheel 5 engages in the croze of the stave 3. Gauging member 12 is then lowered until its edge 12a touches the stave and is locked by a brake 13, 14, the edge 12a indicating on the wheel, by means of graduations 9, the length of the croze. Brake 11 is then released and the wheel rotated until edge 12a contacts support 2. Brake 11 is then reapplied, brake 13, 14 released and member 12 raised. The apparatus is then ready to gauge a second stave and the length of this will be added to the first due to rotation of wheel 5. The process is repeated until all but one of the staves required for a barrel have been gauged. The required size of the final stave is then calculated from the measurements taken. The staves may be placed in faced contact with supports 15 and bowed by a clamp 16 to test the alignment of the croze 4 on adjacent staves 3. A member 17 is provided beneath which the end of a stave can be engaged and the stave then flexed by hand to see if cracks exist. |
