PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new process for producing a glycerol carbonate ester. SOLUTION: The process is to produce the glycerol carbonate ester represented by formula (I) [wherein, R is a hydrogen or an alkyl or an alkenyl group containing 1-3 carbon atoms which may be linear or branched]. The process is characterized as follows. A compound represented by formula (II) [wherein, Y is an -O-CO-Z group (wherein, Z is a hydrogen or an alkyl or an alkenyl group containing 1-3 carbon atoms which may be linear or branched)] is reacted with dimethyl carbonate or diethyl carbonate to form a compound represented by CH<SB>3</SB>-O-CO-Z or CH<SB>3</SB>-CH<SB>2</SB>-O-CO-Z in the course of the transesterification reaction.
