PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for operating a coke oven while suppressing an equipment cost, capable of preventing the occurrence of push-plugging by reducing the pushing out load in a carbonizing chamber. SOLUTION: This method for operating the coke oven is provided by comprising a process of charging coal S to the inside of the carbonizing chamber 1 from a multiple number of coal-charging ports 3a, 3b, 3c, 3d installed at the top part of the carbonizing chamber 1 of the coke oven, a process of producing the coke C by dry-distilling the coal S charged at the inside of the carbonizing chamber 1 and a process of pushing out the produced coke C from the carbonizing chamber 1, and setting the height of the coke C in the carbonizing chamber 1 in the pushing out direction of the coke C so that the average height of the coke C in lower direction of the coal-charging ports 3a, 3b, 3c, 3d installed at a downstream side becomes at or lower than the average height of the coke C in lower direction of the coal-charging ports 3a, 3b, 3c, 3d installed at an upstream side.
