PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable supporting of a thermal head and positioning in a printing direction of a head printing part by a simple constitution. SOLUTION: A thermal head type image forming apparatus a thermal head 4, a head supporting shaft 44 which supports the thermal head 4 rotatably, a platen roller 5 arranged oppositely to the thermal head 4, and a pressing mechanism 6 which presses the thermal head 4 against the platen roller 5 when printing is performed. The head supporting shaft 44 is pivoted by a head supporting bearing 45 disposed at a position which avoids on a printing direction line X of a paper to be recorded P. A positioning part 10 is arranged at the downstream side in the printing direction A of the thermal head 4. When the head printing part 41 is pressed against the platen roller 5 by the pressing mechanism 6, the positioning part 10 comes into contact with a tip part 41a in the printing direction A of the thermal head 41, carrying out positioning in the printing direction A to the platen roller 5 of the head printing part 41.
