PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an integrated automatic exposure control (AEC) sub-system, and to provide an improved signal noise ratio, accuracy and small signal sensitivity in the automatic exposure control (AEC). SOLUTION: This system 400 and method 600 provides independent exposure dose detection, X-ray spectrum and timing compensation, and provides an exposure termination signal to an X-ray system. The system incorporates an interface 406 for receiving exposure characteristic data such as kVp, spectral filter and focal spot. The system through a programmed controller 410 determines one or more control parameters based on the received exposure characteristic data and generates a control signal for controlling an X-ray source 15 (412).
