A portable terminal for managing a power-saving function according to external environmental changes and a method therefor are provided to automatically terminate an unnecessary program in reference to location information received by the terminal when a navigation function is used, and to execute an essential program automatically, thereby preventing unnecessary power consumption. A power sensor(103) senses a type of a charging unit to deliver the sensed results to a controller(101) when power is inputted from the random charging unit. The controller(101) includes a function of managing a power-saving function by automatically terminating or automatically executing a program according to location information of a portable terminal(100) or a signal delivered from the power sensor(103).
