MPEG DATA RECORDING AND REPRODUCING METHOD

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording and reproduction method for realizing seamless reproduction with high quality without causing contradiction of overflow and underflow at the connection of the VBV buffer in the case of joining the first MPEG image data to the second MPEG image data and reproducing the resulting image data.

SOLUTION: Data of a joining interval A of the first MPEG image data and data of a joining interval B of the second MPEG image data are decoded and then re-encoded. The re-encoding is executed while being controlled so that transition of a VBV buffer occupied value is started from a VBV buffer occupied value at a position (m) and finished up to a VBV buffer occupied value at a position (q). Then the first MPEG image data are reproduced until the position (m) of the first MPEG image data, and then re-encoded MPEG image data at the joining interval A+B are reproduced, and thereafter connection is made to the VBV buffer at its address position (q) of the second MPEG image data and the second MPEG image data after the position (q) are reproduced.
