PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display element capable of attaining high contrast at a low cost. SOLUTION: In the display element wherein a liquid crystal is injected between two substrates, two cholesteric liquid crystals having colors different from each other are separated and inserted so as not to be brought into contact with each other. Partitions 62 for separation and insertion are formed along lines of an electrode 61 on a lower side substrate 60. The partitions 62 are adhesively stuck to an upper side counter substrate 60. Lines of an electrode 61 on the counter substrate 60 are orthogonal to the lines of the lower side electrode 61 and matrix driving is achieved. The two cholesteric liquid crystals have a complementary relation so as to form a white color by additive color mixture. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
