An underwater gun for firing a dart or harpoon 3, Figs. 1 and 3, comprises a barrel 2, provided with a handle 1, a pivoted sear, 4, 4a, a trigger 5 biased by a spring 6 and a conventional safety catch 7; an apertured muzzle plug 9 to slidably receive the dart or harpoon; a slider 8 engageable by the end of the dart or harpoon; coaxial springs 10, 11 between the slider 8 and a piston 12; and a hand pump 16, 18 for supplying air or water under pressure from the exterior of the gun to a chamber portion 2a of the barrel, to the right of the piston 12, in order to additionally compress the springs 10, 11 after the dart or harpoon has been loaded. The spring 10 is longer and weaker than the spring 11 and the chamber 2a is closed by a plug 14 secured to a valve block 15 which carries the pump cylinder 16. The block has an air or water inlet 24 closable by a spring-urged valve 22 in a chamber 25 which latter communicates at 26 with a chamber 27 aligned with the cylinder 16. The chamber 27 communicates at 36 with a chamber 29 through a spring-urged valve 30 and the chamber 29 is connected by a passage 32 with the chamber 2a and by a passage (not shown) with a vent port (not shown) closed by a valve 34 urged by a spring 35, the valve 34 being operable by moving a pivoted lever 38. The pump piston-rod 20 is provided with a handle in the form of an arcuate vane 21 and the rod and piston when not in use may be rotated by the vane so that the latter engages round the barrel 2. Only a small effort is needed to load the dart or harpoon and partially compress the springs with the slider 8 engaged behind the sear portion 4a, whereafter by operating the pump, air from a container attachable to the gun or water surrounding the gun is passed to the chamber 2a to fully load the springs. After firing the dart or harpoon, the air or water in the chamber 2a is released by operating the valve 34 by the lever 38, to vent the chamber 29. |
