PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical disk discriminating method with which erroneous discrimination of a kind of an optical disk and presence/no presence of the optical disk caused by dirt, finger print or the like of a signal recording face of the optical disk is prevented as far as possible. SOLUTION: In automatic adjustment of a servo control system, when the optical disk 1 is discriminated as a low reflection type optical disk or no optical disk by the amplitude value of a focus error signal detected first, the amplitude values of the focus error signals are detected several times by changing positions of an optical pickup 2 with respect to the signal recording face of the optical disk 1, and the kind and presence of the optical disk 1 are discriminated again on the basis of the maximum value of the detected amplitude value.
