PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide iron oxide Fe<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>for a pigment exhibiting a brilliant red color. SOLUTION: The iron oxide Fe<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>is Fe<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>powder having a specific surface area of 6-14 m<SP>2</SP>/g. In the Fe<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>powder for the red pigment, a portion of Fe atom in Fe<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>is substituted for one or more kinds of elements selected from Mg, Ca, Sr, Sc, Y, Ti, Zr, B, Ga, In, Si, Ge and Sn so that the substitution rate becomes 0.1-9 mol% in total.
