In order to determine the operational characteristics of a HF power amplifier (1) (e.g. complex forward and reflected voltage, and/or power, complex load impedance, the reflection factor or the ripple factor) on a connection line (3) between the outlet of the HF power amplifier (1) and a complex load (4), in particular an antenna (4), an analog measurement voltage U_u that is proportional to the complex voltage U on the connection line, and an analog measurement voltage U_i that is proportional to the complex current I on the connection line (3) are determined by means of a Buschbeck coupling device. Said measurement voltages are digitalised and said digital values enable the desired operational characteristics to be calculated in a computer (7).
