PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily and surely reduce the resolution deterioration of an optical system by disturbance light and the output deterioration of a photoelectric encoder. SOLUTION: The photoelectric encoder using a lens array 12 for dividing an image of a scale pattern 10 into a plurality of detection regions 14 and then forming then on a light-receiving element (a light-receiving array element 16), comprises a light-shielding array 22 for reducing the influence of disturbance light, between the scale pattern 10 and the lens array 12. The light-shielding array 22 can be formed by a thin film pattern at the side of the lens array 12 of a transparent cover plate (a cover glass 20) for internal protection.
