PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shift lever unit which enables the miniaturization of a lock means. SOLUTION: According to the shift lever unit 10, if a brake 48 is not operated when a shift lever 20 is shifted to a P shift position, an engaging pin 28 is inserted into an insertion hole 30 to lock a shaft 18 to prevent it from rotating, which locks the shift lever 20 to prevent it from turning. If the brake 48 is, on the other hand, not operated when the shift lever 20 is shifted to the P shift position, the engaging pin 28 inserted in the insertion hole 30 is released to unlock the shaft 18 to allow it to rotate, which allows the shift lever 20 to turn. Since locking the shaft 18 to prevent it from rotating locks the shift lever 20 to prevent it from turning, a shift lock mechanism 24 can be constructed simply and can therefore be miniaturized.
