A shielding apparatus (40) for a sensor (28) comprising a laser-emitting diode. The sensor (28) being disposed within a packaging machine for monitoring paperboard blanks (10) processed by a heating element (82) comprised within the packaging machine. The shielding apparatus (40) comprising a tubular member (26) for shielding the laser-emitting diode. The tubular member comprises a coupling means so disposed to facilitate coupling between the sensor and an article processed by the processing apparatus. The tubular member is structured so that the heat radiation emitted by the heating element upon the sensor (28) is restricted by the shielding apparatus (40) so that the operation of the sensor (28) is not impaired.
