The present invention relates to a milling insert comprising a top surface (3), a bottom surface (5) as well as side surfaces (7, 9, 10, 11) extending there between, lines of intersection between said side surfaces (7, 9, 10, 11) and at least one of the top and bottom surfaces (3, 5) comprising cutting edges (14, 14A). The invention also relates to a milling cutter that is provided with at least one milling insert according to the present invention. Characterizing for the milling insert according to the present invention is that it comprises at least one projecting portion (20) projecting relative to the associated side surface (10) and intended to form a pattern in a work piece by milling.
