PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce size of an index, indicating the size of a document by providing the index on the guide surface of a guiding member. SOLUTION: An image reader 32 is provided with a body 22 having a platen glass 6. This body is provided with a document transfer apparatus 5 for transferring document to a platen glass with a platen glass being closed that can be opened or closed at its upper surface. Moreover, the body is provided with an image sensor for reading the document placed, when the document is placed on the platen glass and for reading the document transferred, when the document is transferred to the platen glass with the document transfer apparatus. In addition, the body 22 is provided with a guide member 19, having a guiding surface 19a for guiding the document transferred to the platen glass with the document transfer apparatus to the downstream side of the document transfer apparatus.
