PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet through type image reader to read an image and to more efficiently clean a platen glass surface. SOLUTION: The sheet through type image reader configured to clean the platen glass surface by reciprocally moving the platen glass in press contact with a cleaning member on its surface in a document conveying direction, so that whether document conveyance intervals T when a plurality of documents are successively conveyed in a set document read mode are larger than a time Tsd needed for one reciprocal motion of the platen glass. (S1). When it is decided that T<Tsd ("NO" in S1), the reciprocal operation (cleaning) of the platen glass is inhibited (S6) and when it is decided that T≥Tsd ("YES" in S1), reciprocal operation of the platen glass is carried out (S3 to S5) after reading of a first document is completed and before a second document is started to be read.
