PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mechanical splice that makes insertion and holding of an optical fiber possible without using a fixture or a tool. SOLUTION: The mechanical splice 1 is equipped with: a first base 2 and a second base 3 for holding optical fibers; and a clamp member 4 comprising a fixation section 41 for fixing the first and second bases 2, 3 in the centers, a displacement section 42 capable of transferring the first and second bases from a condition unclamped at both ends (temporary clamped condition) to a condition clamped (regular clamped condition), and a link section 43 for connecting the fixation section 41 and the displacement section 42. The displacement section 42 is provided with a projection 423. In the temporary clamped condition, the projection 423 is engaged with a recess 33 formed in the second base 3 and, in the regular clamped condition, the projection 423 is engaged with a recess 26 formed in the first base 2.
