Production of biodiesel from waste oil and old fats by acidic and/or basic transesterification, comprises activating the free fatty acids contained in the waste oil and old fat mixture by the addition of carboxylic acid chloride to give mixed anhydrides, reacting the mixed anhydride with alcohol, preferably methanol to give fatty acid methyl ester and the corresponding carboxylic acid ester, preferably carboxylic acid methyl ester.
