The method involves controlling a vehicle (F1) by a driver by operating an acceleration plate. A delay request of the driver is recognized based on the position of the acceleration plate. The presence of an object (F2) before the vehicle is detected, and an object-related environment state variable is determined. A brake back-up mode is activated during detection of an object and the delay request of the driver, where a delay adjusted by the driver over the acceleration plate is increased in the brake back-up mode by a brake interference based on the determined state variable. An independent claim is also included for a device for controlling longitudinal movement of a vehicle.
