A composition comprising diosgenin is provided which is able to more effectively inhibit tyrosinase and melanogenesis compared to vitamin C without generating any toxicity and irritation, thereby being usefully used for cosmetics, medicines or foods for skin whitening. A skin whitening composition comprises 0.0001-15 wt.% of diosgenin as an effective ingredient. A skin whitening cosmetic composition comprises the skin whitening composition and is in the form of solution, suspension, emulsion, paste, gel, cream, lotion, powder, soap, surfactant containing cleansing, oil, powdery foundation, emulsion foundation, wax foundation or spray. A skin whitening pharmaceutical composition comprises the skin whitening composition.
