PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording and reproducing device which can prevent accidental erasing of content recorded in the other format on a recording medium in which contents of HDTV and SDTV specifications are mixed and recorded by formatting the medium by only viewing the menu image recorded in the other format. SOLUTION: This recording and reproducing device 100 has a controller 110 to instruct the image forming section 111 to form a warning image when receiving users instruction through the input 109 to format; the image forming section 111 to form a warning image according to the instruction from the controller 110; a display section 112 to display the warning image formed in the image forming section 111; and a search section 116 to check whether or not there are directories recorded in specifications different from those of the CONTENTS on the disk.
