PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide macromolecular particles which have high optical diffusibility and a method for the preparation thereof which can easily control the configuration of the particles. SOLUTION: The method for the production of special configuration macromolecular particles comprises a first step of dissolving a radically polymerizable monomer, a polyfunctional crosslinking monomer, an initiator and a dispersion stabilizer in a solvent and carries out the dispersion polymerization to make monodisperse partial crosslinking seed particles, a second step of dispersing the partial crosslinking seed particles made in the first step on water and activating them by introducing an initiator, a radically polymerizable monomer and a polyfunctional crosslinking monomer into them, and a third step of heat-treating the macromolecular particles which are so prepared as to have a special configuration by carrying out the suspension polymerization of the seed particles activated in the above-mentioned stage under the control of a temperature rising rate. In addition, the special configuration macromolecular particles which are the macromolecular particles prepared by allowing partial crosslinking seed particles to absorb a radically polymerizable monomer and a polyfunctional crosslinking monomer and carrying out the polymerization and which have 200% or more of a surface area increase rate are provided.
