PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simplify a method and apparatus for stacking flat members in terms of structure and technology for control, and to replace the stacked paper body without any influence on the quality of stacked paper body and without stopping. SOLUTION: In the method and apparatus for forming a stack of flat members 10 such as paper sheets like a sheet in conveying the flat members 10 to a stacking area 2 substantially without interruption, the flat members 10 are stacked on a main stacked paper support table 14. After the predetermined number of flat members 10 are stacked on the main stacked paper support table 14, when it exceeds a finished stacked paper body formed by the predetermined flat members 10, an auxiliary stacked paper support table 26 is brought to the stacking area 2. The next flat member 10 is stacked on the auxiliary stacked paper support table 26, the finished stacked paper body is taken out from the main stacked paper support table 14, and the emptied main stacked paper support table 14 is brought under the auxiliary stacked paper support table 26. The auxiliary stacked paper support table 26 is pulled back from the stacking area 2, and a partially stacked paper body formed on the auxiliary stacked paper support table 26 at this point of time is transferred to the main stacked paper support table 14.
